AROUND THE NFL

Tonight is the first round of the NFL Draft from Green Bay. This quote from Pete Prisco: “After one or two guys, players four thru 70 are basically the same,” said one AFC personnel director.– – -The Chargers have TE ANTONIO GATES going into the Hall of Fame this year, so they are playing in the Hall of Fame Game.  Their opponent does not have anyone headed to Canton this year (or in the near future).  RJ Kraft in The Athletic: The Los Angeles Chargers and Detroit Lions will play in the Hall of Fame Game on July 31 — the NFL’s annual preseason kickoff — at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio at 8 p.m. ET.The matchup will take place ahead of the Aug. 2 enshrinement ceremony that will see tight end Antonio Gates, defensive end Jared Allen, defensive back Eric Allen and wide receiver Sterling Sharpe inducted into the Hall of Fame. That class was revealed during February’s NFL Honors show in New Orleans and is the Hall’s smallest induction group in 20 years — and the smallest possible under the new rules.

CHICAGORIP Steve McMichael.  Andrew Seligman of the AP: With his massive frame and larger-than-life persona, Steve McMichael was natural for the gridiron and the squared circle. The man known as “Mongo” and “Ming The Merciless” left a trail of battered and beaten opponents during a Hall of Fame career with the Chicago Bears. Then he did the same as a professional wrestler.McMichael, a star defensive tackle on the Bears’ famed 1985 Super Bowl championship team who remained a fixture in the Windy City for decades, died Wednesday following a battle with ALS. He was 67.McMichael died at Lightways Hospice in suburban Joliet, his publicist, Betsy Shepherd, told The Associated Press. An All-Pro in 1985 and 1987, McMichael was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2024. He played in a franchise-record 191 consecutive games from 1981 to 1993 and ranks second to Richard Dent on the Bears’ career sacks list with 92 1/2. His final NFL season was with Green Bay in 1994.McMichael’s brash personality and willingness to say whatever was on his mind made him a perfect fit for pro wrestling. He began working for World Championship Wrestling in the 1990s at the height of the “Monday Night Wars” with the World Wrestling Federation, starting as a color commentator and later joining Ric Flair in the “Four Horsemen” group.“I promise you, this epitaph that I’m going to have on me now? This ain’t ever how I envisioned this was going to end,” McMichael told the Chicago Tribune.McMichael had been experiencing tingling in his arms for some time that he figured was a neck or spine issue stemming from his playing days or his work as a wrestler. A neurosurgeon at the Mayo Clinic suggested in September 2020 that he had ALS. McMichael sought other opinions, and in January 2021, doctors in Chicago confirmed the diagnosis.Though he mostly retreated from public life following his announcement, photos posted on social media by family and friends showed his decline. McMichael went from a 270-pound giant who used to blast through blockers and drive wrestlers headfirst into the mat with the “Mongo spike” to someone who was rail-thin, bedridden and hooked up to machines as his body failed him.“He’s scared to die and he shouldn’t be because he’s the most badass man I’ve ever known inside and out,” his wife, Misty McMichael, told The Associated Press prior to his Hall of Fame induction on Aug. 3, 2024. “He’s a good man. He’s gonna be in heaven before any of us, so I don’t know what he’s afraid of. But I’ve told him to please hang on ’til the (induction) and then, you know, I don’t want to see him suffer anymore. He’s been suffering.”

NEW ORLEANSKatherine Terrell of ESPN.com reports from the Saints pre-draft press availability on the murky health status of QB DEREK CARR:— New Orleans Saints general manager Mickey Loomis confirmed quarterback Derek Carr has an “issue” with his shoulder but didn’t answer any further questions about Carr’s current status at a predraft news conference Wednesday.“He does have an issue with his shoulder, we’re hoping to get some resolution and clarity on that in the near future, and when we do, I’ll report back to you,” Loomis said.News of Carr’s shoulder issue was made public in early April, three days before the team was set to report for the beginning of their voluntary offseason workout program.Loomis declined any other Carr-related questions, including when the team found out about the injury, but said that it would not affect their draft approach. The Saints hold the ninth pick in the draft, which begins Thursday night.“I don’t think the draft approach is different for us than it would be in any year,” Loomis said. “We’re hoping for as many good players, great players, as we can find. And we’re fortunate enough this year to have multiple picks in the first four rounds and we’re excited about that because I think there’s some depth in this draft.”Loomis also announced the team would be picking up the fifth-year option of wide receiver Chris Olave, who has started 28 games for the Saints but played in only eight games last season due to multiple concussions.Loomis said the team would not be picking up the fifth-year option of offensive tackle Trevor Penning, who was the team’s starting left tackle in 2023 before being benched later that season. Penning was moved to a role as starting right tackle after the Saints selected offensive tackle Taliese Fuaga in the first round of the 2024 draft.“We are going to exercise the option on Chris and we’re not going to exercise the option on Trevor, but that doesn’t mean we don’t love Trevor and expect him to be part of our team going forward,” Loomis said. The Saints restructured Carr’s contract in March, opening up almost $31 million in salary cap space by converting Carr’s base salary and roster bonus into a signing bonus. The move cut his 2025 cap hit to $20.4 million but ballooned his 2026 cap hit to $69.2 million and guaranteed his $40 million in salary and bonuses, likely tying Carr to the Saints until next year.Several league sources told ESPN that they believed Carr was open to testing the market before the restructure. Carr played in only 10 games last year due to an oblique injury and a fractured hand that caused him to miss the final games of the season.Loomis was asked if restructures in general require a player to pass a physical and said, “restructures can come in all sorts of forms.”Carr has not been at the team facility for the start of the offseason program, but Loomis said he’s been happy with the attendance overall.“I feel really good about it, excited about the new staff, excited about some of the things that we’ve doing that are different and I feel like, from a player standpoint, I just feel a level of excitement and enthusiasm that gives us a lot of positive feelings,” Loomis said.

LOS ANGELES RAMSWill the Rams be landing CB JALEN RAMSEY?   Cameron DeSilva of USA TODAYThe Los Angeles Rams are in the market for cornerback help and will almost certainly address the position in the NFL draft this week. There’s a possibility they’ll add a playmaker outside the draft, too.Dolphins cornerback Jalen Ramsey is on the trade block after he and the team mutually agreed to seek a deal. The Dolphins haven’t found a trade partner yet, but there’s a chance he’ll be moved at some point soon.Les Snead and Sean McVay spoke about the possibility of acquiring Ramsey during Tuesday’s pre-draft press conference and neither ruled it out. In fact, Snead even said he’s had discussions with the Dolphins about a deal.McVay sounds open to bringing Ramsey back, though he admitted there are “a lot of layers” to it.
SAN FRANCISCODianna Russini of The Athletic has a source: The San Francisco 49ers and Brock Purdy are inching closer to a long-term extension, according to sources close to the situation. The contract is expected to include an average annual value that ranks in the top 10 in the NFL (and at Purdy’s position).Purdy showed up for the start of 49ers OTAs, while star teammate George Kittle did not. Kittle wants to become the NFL’s highest-paid tight end, per a league source. Trey McBride reset the market earlier this offseason; the 25-year-old inked a four-year, $76 million pact with Arizona. San Francisco’s offers to Kittle have thus far been rebuffed, and the two sides remain apart as Kittle, who will be 32 in October, enters the final year of his deal. I’m told no trade request has been made, but other teams are keeping an eye on it. This draws a response from, of all people, TE GEORGE KITTLE: @gkittle46Your source is incorrect

JACKSONVILLEDo the Jaguars want to move up for ATH TRAVIS HUNTER?  That is what James Jones of CBSSports.com is hearing: Under new general manager James Gladstone, the Jaguars have promised to be aggressive in all aspects of their operation, and you should take them at their word. The Jaguars hold the No. 5 pick in the draft — at least for a few more hours. Early mocks had the Jaguars taking Michigan defensive tackle Mason Graham. Recently, the noise has grown loud around the Jags selecting Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty at No. 5. But sources indicate Jacksonville could be even more aggressive than that. While we know the Titans aren’t moving off No. 1, the Browns and Giants have each fielded increased calls in recent days. Sources indicate the Jaguars have strong interest in moving up the draft board Thursday. And with a good helping of pass rushers, the Jaguars’ logical target would be Colorado two-way star Travis Hunter.Hunter and Penn State edge rusher Abdul Carter are considered the top two targets in the draft, and a team hoping to select either comfortably would need to slot in just behind the Titans, who will be selecting Miami quarterback Cam Ward on Thursday.Gladstone is a first-time, first-year GM at the ripe age of 34. A protégé of Rams GM Les Snead, Gladstone has been waiting for this moment his entire career. He could be lining up for a big move.
THIS AND THAT
FEELY LEAVES CBS TO RUN FOR CONGRESSTampa’s own Jay Feely, the onetime roommate of Tom Brady at Michigan and NFL kicker, is leaving CBS Sports as he makes a bid for what will be an open Congressional seat in Arizona. Former NFL kicker Jay Feely announced he will be running for Congress in Arizona in 2026.Feely, 48, will be running for a U.S. House of Representatives seat in Arizona’s 5th Congressional district in the 2026 midterm elections. The former New York Giants kicker will be looking to replace Rep. Andy Biggs, who is looking to run for governor in Arizona.Biggs, a Republican congressman, won Arizona’s 5th Congressional district with 60.4% of the vote in 2024.According to ESPN, Feely submitted a formal statement of interest with Arizona secretary of state Adrian Fontes on Tuesday, which is a requirement candidates must fulfill before they can be placed on the ballot.“I’m excited about this next chapter of my life,” Feely said in a statement. “I think that I feel God’s calling pressing me into service, and that’s really what I believe it is, is the civil service. I don’t believe we have enough politicians that get into political office not for self-serving measures and that get into political office and don’t want it to be a career, and that’s what I believe.”Feely reportedly said President Donald Trump and Rep. Jim Jordan petitioned him to run for Congress in 2022, but he declined because he still had children in high school. Arizona’s 5th Congressional district is the southeastern sprawl of Maricopa County into Pinal County.  Gilbert, Queen Creek (Brock Purdy) and Apache Junction are some of the communities at play.  Biggs consistently won his elections by about 60-40, so if Feely gets the nomination, he is likely to be heading to Congress. FourthEstate48 has this on the prospective candidates in the race: Feely is expected to face two other candidates in the Republican primary: (state rep) Travis Grantham and Alex Stovall, as of now.Stovall previously faced a U.S. Army Reserve investigation after appearing in uniform in political ads and questioning President Biden’s legitimacy.Grantham, a more conventional GOP figure, brings a well-established East Valley legislative record and may appeal to traditional Republican voters, but lack significant name ID. Grantham previously ran for Congress in 2012 in the newly drawn CD9. He placed fourth in the Republican primary2. Vernon Parker won but lost to then-Democrat Kyrsten Sinema.Polling conducted in late February by NextGenP shows that former Pinal County Sheriff Mark Lamb, though undeclared, would enter the race as the immediate frontrunner if he were to run. Lamb received nearly 50% support in a five-person ballot test, holding a 49%-4% lead over the next closest potential candidate. His name ID and net favorability (+70%) were both off the charts — and Feely was not named in the survey. Lamb had a strong showing against Lake in the U.S. Senate primary last year earning nearly 40% of the Republican vote statewide. If Lamb ultimately stays out, the race could become a free-for-all among a diverse group of conservatives vying for the post-Biggs seat. Feely is likely to have to explain on the campaign trail why someone whose first name is Thomas goes by “Jay”.
MOCK DRAFTS COMPAREDWe compare and contrast Mock Drafts from Field Yates of ESPN.com, Pete Prisco of CBSSports.com and Daniel Jeremiah of NFL.com1. Tennessee TitansYates’ pick prediction: Cam Ward, QB, MiamiThe Titans’ entire offseason has been structured around making Ward the first pick of the draft, as the team spent big along the offensive line with Dan Moore Jr. and Kevin Zeitler to protect its future signal-caller. Ward is a dynamic, innovative thrower, and he can be the answer under center in Tennessee.Prisco pick prediction: Cam Ward QB, MiamiThey locked into him early in the process as the guy who can turn their franchise around. The question is whether he’s an elite player or a quarterback being forced up the board because of need.Jeremiah pick prediction: Cam Ward, QB, MiamiIt sounds like the cat could be out of the bag with this pick, based on Titans GM Mike Borgonzi’s comments this week. It’s time to bring some excitement to Tennessee, and Ward has a very enticing skill set.2. Cleveland BrownsYates’ pick prediction: Travis Hunter, WR/CB, ColoradoCleveland GM Andrew Berry said the Browns view Hunter primarily as a wide receiver at the next level, but he also acknowledged they would use him on both sides of the ball if they take him at No. 2. He can help them in both places — especially the passing offense, which averaged a league-low 5.9 yards per attempt last season. It’s hard to find a weakness in Hunter’s game.Prisco pick prediction: Travis Hunter ATH, ColoradoHe is the best player in the draft, so just take him. The Browns will play him at receiver and spot him in at corner. They can get a quarterback at the top of Round 2.Jeremiah pick prediction: Travis Hunter, WR/CB, ColoradoAt the end of the day, the Browns decide they can’t bypass all that Hunter brings to the table. GM Andrew Berry has said he views the two-way star as a wide receiver first and then a cornerback. Cleveland will have a fun duo at receiver with Hunter and Jerry Jeudy.3. New York GiantsYates’ pick prediction: Abdul Carter, Edge, Penn StateWhile the Giants have done extensive homework on the top quarterbacks in this class — including Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders — I believe they will ultimately opt for the best player available. Carter joins Hunter in a two-player top tier and has a rare first step off the edge that helped him to 12 sacks last season. He has a chance to be a consistent double-digit sack getter at the NFL level.Prisco pick prediction: Abdul Carter Edge Penn StateTake the best edge player and add him to your deep, talented front. It just makes sense. Either take a quarterback later in the draft or get one next year.Jeremiah pick prediction:  Abdul Carter, Edge, Penn StateThere’s been chatter about the Giants potentially trading out of this pick, but if they stay put, I think they address the defensive line. Carter could take their front from good to great.4. New England PatriotsYates’ pick prediction: Will Campbell, OT, LSUWith a pair of notable needs at offensive tackle and receiver, the Patriots have work to do in supporting quarterback Drake Maye in his second season. Campbell checks one box. He has outstanding footwork, yielding just two sacks over the past two seasons. And despite his modest 32⅝-inch arm length, Campbell is a starting NFL left tackle. Coaches who have played against Mike Vrabel-led teams in the past told me Campbell embodies attributes that the Pats’ new coach values in his players: toughness, dependability and physicality.Prisco pick prediction: Will Campbell OT, LSUThe Patriots need a left tackle, which is why Campbell should be the pick. I think he’s more guard than tackle, but they can play him at left tackle to protect Drake Maye’s blindside.Jeremiah pick prediction: Will Campbell, OT, LSUThe Patriots must upgrade the left tackle position heading into Year 2 for Drake Maye. Campbell fits the bill. He’ll be a long-term starter for New England.DB INTERRUPTION – The fact that so many inside draft experts think that the Patriots are going to take Campbell at number four puzzles the DB.  We don’t know that he is all that better a prospect than Kelvin Blanks and Armand Membou that a trade down would not be a good idea (if they really want Campbell, they might still get him).  If the Raiders or Bears really want Jeanty, why wouldn’t they make the jump up to get him, rather than accept Jacksonville’s sudden reported interest in Jeanty? That said, we looked at several other Mocks, including Dane Brugler at The Athletic and Charles Davis at NFL.com – and the top 6 picks are baked in as here on all of them. 5. Jacksonville JaguarsYates’ pick prediction: Ashton Jeanty, RB, Boise StateNew Jaguars GM James Gladstone has used the phrase “intangibly rich” during the predraft process. Jeanty fits that description as a top-five prospect with rare contact balance, power and explosion. I would personally attack the defensive side of the ball if I were in Jacksonville’s shoes, but new coach Liam Coen might want to get quarterback Trevor Lawrence more playmakers. Many around the league believe the Jags are headed in this direction.Prisco pick prediction:  Ashton Jeanty RB, Boise StateThey take a back in this spot after failing to trade down. They pass on Mason Graham to take the third-best player in this draft. He helps the passing game by juicing up the run game.Jeremiah pick prediction:  Ashton Jeanty, RB, Boise StateBased on everything I’ve heard from talking to people around the league, the expectation is the Jaguars will pick either Jeanty or Arizona WR Tetairoa McMillan here. I’ll go with the higher-rated player on my board.6. Las Vegas RaidersYates’ pick prediction: Kelvin Banks Jr., OT, TexasBanks has been one of my favorite prospects throughout the process and has a lot of the traits you’d want from a high pick. He is experienced (42 career starts), has very good footwork and power, is only 21 years old and plays a premium position. Current Raiders starting left tackle Kolton Miller is entering the final year of his contract, and teams can never have enough quality offensive linemen. I’ve also heard Jeanty’s name here, but he’s off the board at No. 5 in this mock draft.Prisco pick prediction: Kelvin Banks Jr. OT, TexasWith Jeanty off the board, they go big and take a right tackle who can start right away. Banks could also play guard if need be. They could also consider Mason Graham here, but I think they go big on offense.Jeremiah pick prediction: Kelvin Banks Jr., OT, TexasWith Jeanty unavailable, the Raiders decide to continue building at the line of scrimmage. I would assume Texas coach Steve Sarkisian gave his former boss, Pete Carroll, a strong recommendation on Banks. With Kolton Miller seeking a new contract, Banks gives Las Vegas insurance at left tackle. In the meantime, he could play guard if needed.7. New York JetsYates’ pick prediction: Mason Graham, DT, MichiganThis would represent an excellent value for the Jets, as Graham is No. 3 overall on my board. But he would also check a need for the Jets along their defensive front. I could see New York putting Graham — a disruptive interior pass rusher — next to Quinnen Williams. Missouri offensive tackle Armand Membou would also be a logical target for the Jets.Prisco pick prediction: Armand Membou OT, MissouriThey decide to take a player who can give them bookend tackle for years to come. They could also consider Penn State tight end Tyler Warren here, but I think offensive line will win out.Jeremiah pick prediction: Armand Membou, OT, MissouriI think this pick comes down to Membou versus Penn State TE Tyler Warren for new GM Darren Mougey and head coach Aaron Glenn. They choose Membou, who slides into the right tackle spot as potentially the final piece to the Jets’ offensive line overhaul of the last few years.8. Carolina PanthersYates’ pick prediction: Armand Membou, OT, MissouriI know defense is an issue in Carolina; the Panthers allowed an NFL-worst 31.4 points per game last season. But the offensive line could become a big problem very soon, and I think the Panthers could look that way. Taylor Moton and Ikem Ekwonu are entering the final years of their contracts (assuming Carolina does not pick up Ekwonu’s fifth-year option), and Carolina has to improve Bryce Young’s protection. Membou is a tone-setter who makes an impact in the run game and surrendered just one sack during the 2024 season.Prisco pick prediction: Jalon Walker LB, GeorgiaThe Panthers could look at Mason Graham here, but they need more help on the edge after adding two defensive tackles in free agency. Walker can play off the ball as well.Jeremiah pick prediction: Mason Graham, DT, MichiganCarolina took a big swing at Milton Williams in free agency and missed. They did end up signing defensive tackles, but none of the additions are of Graham’s caliber.9. New Orleans SaintsYates’ pick prediction: Jalon Walker, Edge/LB, GeorgiaThe Saints could go in a lot of directions, though I get the sense in talking to people around the league that quarterback likely isn’t one of them. The team must get younger and more explosive up front on defense as it moves into a new scheme under coordinator Brandon Staley. Walker is a hybrid player who played more snaps as a stand-up linebacker than edge rusher at Georgia, but he flashed excellent acceleration and juice when rushing the passer. I wouldn’t rule out an offensive tackle for the Saints here, either. Oregon’s Josh Conerly Jr. is a name to monitor if the boards falls in this way.Prisco pick prediction: Mykel Williams EDGE, GeorgiaThe Saints need offensive line help, but the way the board plays out the top tackles are gone. So they take a power edge player for a team that needs help rushing the passer.Jeremiah pick prediction: Mykel Williams, Edge, GeorgiaThere’s a lot of talk about the Saints drafting a quarterback at No. 9, but I think they’ll address that position in the second round. They have an affinity for long, physical edge rushers — Williams fits that mold.10. Chicago BearsYates’ pick prediction: Tyler Warren, TE, Penn StateAfter the Bears acquired three starting offensive linemen in free agency, their draft board opened up. They could go back to the OL well and keep adding. They could draft a pass rusher. Or they could take the best player available. This pick would fall into the final category, as Warren is my seventh-ranked prospect. People I’ve spoken to around the NFL are already imagining the creative offensive wrinkles that new coach Ben Johnson could think up for Warren, who is terrific with the football in his hands.Prisco pick prediction: Colston Loveland TE, MichiganThe Bears haven’t had a great pass-catching tight end for a bit. Loveland is the better of the top two tight ends in terms of pass-catching ability. Ben Johnson will love having him to team up with Cole Kmet.Jeremiah pick prediction: Tyler Warren, TE, Penn StateWith the top offensive linemen and Jeanty off the board, Warren becomes a very attractive piece for Ben Johnson’s offense. The Bears will be living in 12 personnel with Warren, Cole Kmet, DJ Moore and Rome Odunze on the field. That’s a group to be excited about.11. San Francisco 49ersYates’ pick prediction: Mykel Williams, Edge, GeorgiaWilliams battled through an ankle injury in 2024 but still had dominant moments that proved his high upside. He has excellent length and play strength, and while he played a lot inside the tackle’s shoulder last season, he would be able to rush the passer off the edge more in San Francisco. The 49ers must address both lines throughout this draft, and they have 11 picks to do so.Prisco pick prediction: Walter Nolen DL, Ole MissTheir defensive tackle spot is a mess. They pass on taking Mason Graham here to take Nolen, who some scouts think will be better. Nolen has the tools to be a dominant player if focused.Jeremiah pick prediction: Grey Zabel, IOL, North Dakota State · IOL · SeniorThe 49ers’ offensive line needs an influx of young talent with Trent Williams approaching his age-37 season, Aaron Banks departing in free agency and Brock Purdy getting set to sign a massive extension. Zabel can step in and start at guard from Day 1.12. Dallas CowboysYates’ pick prediction: Tetairoa McMillan, WR, ArizonaThe Cowboys are short on offensive playmakers alongside CeeDee Lamb, making McMillan a seamless fit. He has excellent size, runs efficient routes and has a big catch radius. And he’s the only FBS player with more than 1,300 receiving yards in each of the past two seasons. Dak Prescott would look his way often in the red zone.Prisco pick prediction: Tetairoa McMillan WR, ArizonaThe Cowboys need to balance their passing game to go with CeeDee Lamb. McMillan has been compared to Mike Evans, but I think he’s more like Drake London. That will still help Dak Prescott.Jeremiah pick prediction:  Tetairoa McMillan, WR, AlabamaI could see the Cowboys trying to trade out of this pick, but if they stay at No. 12, they could be choosing between the top remaining wide receivers, North Carolina RB Omarion Hampton and Alabama OG Tyler Booker. In this case, they go with a big target to complement CeeDee Lamb13. Miami DolphinsYates’ pick prediction: Will Johnson, CB, MichiganEven before the news that Jalen Ramsey’s days in Miami are likely over, I saw cornerback as a big need for the Dolphins. Storm Duck, Cam Smith and Ethan Bonner are the other starter options on the roster right now. Johnson was limited to six games in 2024 by a foot injury, but his size, ball skills and instincts are so good that he deserves to be a top-15 pick. Miami played zone coverage two-thirds of the time last season, which would offset any questions around Johnson’s speed.Prisco pick prediction: Mason Graham DL, MichiganThis is a big fall for Graham, who some saw as a potential top-5 pick. He isn’t a big player for the position, but he is technically sound. The Dolphins have a major need.Jeremiah pick prediction: Denver PROJECTED TRADE WITH MIAMI                                             Colston Loveland, TE, MichiganI believe Loveland is highly coveted by a bunch of teams, and it seems like the Dolphins would like to add more draft capital. Sean Payton has never been shy about being aggressive — the Saints traded up in the first round four times during his tenure as head coach. If he wants something, he usually goes and gets it. The signing of Evan Engram would not preclude Denver from making an aggressive move for Loveland.14. Indianapolis ColtsYates’ pick prediction: Colston Loveland, TE, MichiganOne of the most mind-blowing stats that has come up in my draft prep: The Colts have not had a tight end reach 500 receiving yards since Eric Ebron did so in 2018. That streak would end in a hurry if they take Loveland, though. He is not far behind Warren in my rankings (No. 11), as he’s a smooth route runner with good hands. As Indianapolis sorts through its long-term quarterback situation, having more dependable middle-of-the-field playmakers would go a long way in getting the passing game on track.Prisco pick prediction: Tyler Warren TE, Penn StateHe is the best all-round tight end in the class. The Colts lack a dominant tight end and Warren will give them that. He’s also a good blocker, which matters with Jonathan Taylor as the focal point of the offenseJeremiah pick prediction: Shemar Stewart, Edge, Texas A&MColts GM Chris Ballard has always placed a premium on athletic traits, and Stewart offers those in a big way. This feels very similar to the selection of Kwity Paye when he was coming out of college in 2021. Indianapolis drafts an edge rusher in the first round for the second year in a row (Laiatu Latu in 2024) after losing Dayo Odeyingbo in free agency.15. Atlanta FalconsYates’ pick prediction: Mike Green, Edge, MarshallThe Falcons had 31 sacks last season, second fewest in the NFL. They brought in Leonard Floyd in free agency, but there is still a lot of work to do on the pass rush. Green led all FBS players with 17 sacks last season and has the scheme versatility to play with a hand in the dirt as a 4-3 defensive end or standing up as an outside linebacker in a 3-4. Scouts from other teams took notice of Atlanta’s significant contingent on hand at Green’s pro day workout.Prisco pick prediction:  James Pearce Jr. Edge, TennesseeHe is a top-10 player, but has some character concerns. Even so, the Falcons need edge help. He is worth taking a chance on in this spot.Jeremiah pick prediction: Jalon Walker, Edge, GeorgiaI think this is the year Atlanta addresses the pass rush in Round 1. There’s a lot of chatter about James Pearce Jr. going to the Falcons, but in this scenario, Walker falls into their lap. He can rush off the edge — on passing downs, at the minimum — and play off the ball, too.16. Arizona CardinalsYates’ pick prediction: Josh Simmons, OT, Ohio StateSimmons’ wide draft range is simply because he’s recovering from a torn patellar tendon. But fully healthy, he has massive upside at left tackle, with great footwork in pass protection. Arizona could form an all-Ohio State tackle duo with Simmons and Paris Johnson Jr. And perhaps no NFL team is more familiar with Simmons’ game than the Cardinals, because their new offensive line coach Justin Frye served as Ohio State’s run game coordinator/offensive line coach for the past two seasons.Prisco pick prediction: Jihaad Campbell LB, AlabamaThey take a playmaker for their defense who can do for them what Zack Baun did for the Eagles. Jonathan Gannon knows defense and knows he can use help at linebacker.Jeremiah pick prediction: Emeka Egbuka, WR, Ohio StateArizona reunites Egbuka with Ohio State teammate Marvin Harrison Jr. to give Kyler Murray a dynamic tandem at receiver. Egbuka fills a need, and he can help bring the best out of Harrison.17. Cincinnati BengalsYates’ pick prediction: Walter Nolen, DT, Ole MissIt’s hard to find an area on defense that isn’t an issue for Cincinnati, especially with uncertainty still surrounding Trey Hendrickson’s future. With or without Hendrickson, the Bengals are desperate for more pass-rush help. Nolen could help from the interior, given his combination of power and an explosive first step.Prisco pick prediction:  Derrick Harmon DL, OregonThe interior of their defense remains a question mark. When was the last time they had a push-the-pocket inside player? Was it Geno Atkins? Harmon can do that.Jeremiah pick prediction: Donovan Ezeiruaku, Edge, Boston CollegeEzeiruaku is a skilled pass rusher with some similarities to Bengals DE Trey Hendrickson, whose future with the team remains murky.18. Seattle SeahawksYates’ pick prediction: Grey Zabel, G, North Dakota StateThe Seahawks are adjusting their offensive system this season under new coordinator Klint Kubiak, and they could use reinforcements on the interior offensive line. Zabel has the standout footwork to thrive in Kubiak’s zone scheme at guard. He starred at North Dakota State at multiple positions and then shined at the Senior Bowl against top competition, affirming his standing as a first-round prospect.Prisco pick prediction: Nick Emmanwori S, South CarolinaThe word around the league is that they see this kid as their Kyle Hamilton. Mike Macdonald came from the Ravens and was there when Hamilton was picked. They could also consider offensive line here.Jeremiah pick prediction: NY GIANTS PROJECTED TRADE WITH SEATTLE                                            Jaxson Dart, QB, Ole MissThe Giants and Browns are both candidates to trade back into the first round, with the goal of moving ahead of the QB-needy Steelers. I’ve heard talk about the Seahawks looking to trade out of Round 1, so this pairing makes sense. New York would get its QB and Seattle GM John Schneider would be armed with a boatload of Day 2 picks after this trade. There’s a belief in league circles that the Giants view Dart as a better fit than Shedeur Sanders.19. Tampa Bay BuccaneersYates’ pick prediction: Jahdae Barron, CB, TexasTampa Bay has made it clear that cornerback is a priority this offseason. Barron has elite instincts and is versatile. The Bucs tied for 26th in picks last season with seven, so Barron’s ball skills would be welcomed.Prisco pick prediction: Maxwell Hairston CB, KentuckyTheir corner situation needs help and they are talking about moving Tykee Smith to safety from nickel. That means they need help. In their scheme, Hairston’s speed will be a big plus.Jeremiah pick prediction: Matthew Golden, WR, TexasIt would not be a surprise to see Alabama LB Jihaad Campbell go to Tampa Bay at No. 19, but with Mike Evans heading into his 12th season, the Bucs opt to add another pass catcher. Golden would team up with 2024 third-round pick Jalen McMillan to give them two good, young wideouts to complement veterans Evans and Chris Godwin.20. Denver BroncosYates’ pick prediction: Matthew Golden, WR, TexasThe Broncos have assembled a talented roster, but they should continue to invest around quarterback Bo Nix. Golden would add some field-flipping speed to this offense. While he plays a decidedly different style than Courtland Sutton, this pick would also help Denver’s receiver room for the long term; Sutton is entering the final year of his contract.Prisco pick prediction: Emeka Egbuka WR, Ohio StateThey can get their back later, so taking a receiver to help the passing game makes sense. Teams love Egbuka in terms of his pro-ready demeanor.Jeremiah pick prediction: Miami PROJECTED TRADE WITH DENVER                                             Malaki Starks, S, GeorgiaI could see the Dolphins taking Starks at No. 13, but in this case, they trade back and still get him. Starks is a perfect fit for Miami, which lost Jevon Holland and could be on the verge of parting with Jalen Ramsey. Starks has the versatility to start at nickelback or safety.21. Pittsburgh SteelersYates’ pick prediction: Omarion Hampton, RB, North CarolinaWe can’t ignore the possibility of a quarterback, as the Steelers continue to wait on Aaron Rodgers — especially with Sanders still on the board. But the sense I’ve gotten in recent days is Pittsburgh could go another direction. Running back is a glaring hole, and we know offensive coordinator Arthur Smith has an affinity for power backs who can handle a big workload. Hampton is a Day 1 starter.Prisco pick prediction: Kenneth Grant DL MichiganThey pass on the quarterback to take an interior player, which they like to do. Grant is a power player who can help offset the loss of Cam Heyward when he retires.Jeremiah pick prediction: Shedeur Sanders, QB, ColoradoI’m not convinced the Steelers will take Sanders if he’s available, but if he doesn’t go here, I’m not sure where he ends up. Mason Rudolph can provide a little bit of a bridge until Sanders is ready to go. This pick is a classic case of need meeting value.22. Los Angeles ChargersYates’ pick prediction: Tyler Booker, G, AlabamaFew teams have a clearer identity than the Chargers, who believe strongly in being able to dominate in the trenches. Booker would help further cement that along the offensive line thanks to his power. The Chargers are a classic fit for Booker, who would likely leapfrog Zion Johnson into the starting lineup and pair with Mekhi Becton to form the league’s largest guard duo.Prisco pick prediction: Mike Green EDGE, MarshallThe Chargers have vet Khalil Mack on a one-year deal, so they need to get a younger edge player. They could consider receiver here, but I think they pass to take Green.Jeremiah pick prediction: TreVeyon Henderson, RB, Ohio StateIt certainly would raise some eyebrows if Jim Harbaugh were to pass on two of his former Michigan pupils (DT Kenneth Grant and CB Will Johnson) to take an Ohio State product. That said, Henderson might just be too enticing here. He would be the lightning to Najee Harris’ thunder, giving the Chargers an explosive running game.23. Green Bay PackersYates’ pick prediction: Shemar Stewart, Edge, Texas A&MYou’ll hear the traits versus production debate in any draft room, but many evaluators across the league believe Stewart’s immense upside and great physical skills make up for his meager college production (4.5 sacks in three seasons). Green Bay hasn’t been afraid of betting on edge rushers with plus traits in prior drafts.Prisco pick prediction:  Matthew Golden WR, TexasHe has the speed teams covet, which the Packers badly need with Christian Watson coming off injury. Golden would be my top-ranked receiver, but I think he lasts until this spot.Jeremiah pick prediction: Maxwell Hairston, CB, KentuckyThe Packers love SEC defensive players, and Hairston can really run. He battled through injury in 2024, but his 2023 tape is exceptional. With Jaire Alexander potentially on the move, Green Bay adds help at cornerback.24. Minnesota VikingsYates’ pick prediction: Nick Emmanwori, S, South CarolinaMinnesota’s safety room is starting to change; Camryn Bynum is now in Indianapolis, and Harrison Smith is 36 years old. Emmanwori has exceptional physical traits and ball skills, dominating at the combine after a four-INT season.Prisco pick prediction:  Malaki Starks S, GeorgiaThey let Cam Bynum go to the Colts and Harrison Smith is coming to the end. They need a rangy player on the back end and Starks is that guy.Jeremiah pick prediction: Derrick Harmon, DT, OregonThe expectation is the Vikings will address either the offensive or defensive line here, even after making additions at those spots through free agency. Harmon can learn from Jonathan Allen and Javon Hargrave before becoming a full-time starter.25. Houston TexansYates’ pick prediction: Josh Conerly Jr., OT, OregonThe Texans have reconstructed their offensive line, including replacing Laremy Tunsil with Cam Robinson at left tackle. But they must be mindful of the long-term future of an essential spot. Conerly is a balanced and controlled pass protector, and he could help keep C.J. Stroud upright.Prisco pick prediction:  Donovan Jackson IOL Ohio StateThe Texans have revamped their offensive line, but it isn’t much better. Jackson can play either guard spot or tackle and there is value in that. Teams love him as a person.Jeremiah pick prediction: Tyler Booker, G, AlabamaThe Texans are intent on changing the culture of their offensive line room, and Booker’s intangibles are as highly regarded as any I’ve come across in my time scouting offensive linemen.26. Los Angeles RamsYates’ pick prediction: Carson Schwesinger, LB, UCLASchwesinger’s range, versatility and processing skills will appeal to Los Angeles, which has a thin linebacker room at the moment. His 115 tackles ranked 14th in the country last season.Prisco pick prediction:  Mason Taylor TE, LSUThey need a tight end who can get down the field and Taylor is that type of player. I think he’s one of the most-underrated players in this draft, a productive college player who will produce on the next level.Jeremiah pick prediction: Omarion Hampton, RB, North CarolinaOn the surface, this might be puzzling, given the presence of Kyren Williams. But Williams is in the final year of his contract and had only one carry of 30-plus yards last season. In comparison, Saquon Barkley had 13 such runs, including the playoffs. Hampton provides a more explosive element to the Rams’ run game and can eventually take over as RB1.27. Baltimore RavensYates’ pick prediction: Malaki Starks, S, GeorgiaThe Ravens have a strong track record of letting the board come to them, which would be the case with Starks. He has range, versatility and ball skills, and he would pair very well with Kyle Hamilton in trying to button up a Ravens pass defense that was far too vulnerable to explosive plays for much of last season.Prisco pick prediction:  Shemar Stewart EDGE, Texas A&MThey have three edge players with expiring contracts after the season. They have to get a young speedy rusher. Stewart has a ton of tools and could wait a year to be an every-down player as he improves his techniques.Jeremiah pick prediction: Kenneth Grant, DT, MichiganThis one is pretty simple: The Ravens are well connected at Michigan, and they have a need on the interior defensive line after Michael Pierce’s retirement.28. Detroit LionsYates’ pick prediction: Donovan Jackson, G, Ohio StateI’m a big fan of Jackson’s game, and he won me over with how seamlessly he shifted from guard to left tackle when Ohio State needed him there last season. He’s tough, physical and reliable, and he fits the Lions’ team culture. Jackson could take the starting right guard spot as a rookie.Prisco pick prediction:  Grey Zabel IOL, North Dakota StateThey can get a player to push for time at right guard next year and ultimately become their center of the future when Frank Ragnow retires. Zabel’s versatility would be a nice addition to a good offensive line.Jeremiah pick prediction: Donovan Jackson, G, Ohio StateThe Lions have done a lot of homework on interior offensive linemen in this draft class. Jackson has been a riser throughout the evaluation process and would be the replacement for Kevin Zeitler. Jackson might not even make it to this pick, though.29. Washington CommandersProjected Commanders-Browns tradeYates’ trade projection: We’re almost through Round 1, and Ward is still the only quarterback off the board. With a few QB-needy teams waiting at the top of Round 2, the Browns could pounce on the opportunity to move up to secure their guy. I have Cleveland trading Nos. 33 and 104 (a fourth-rounder) to Washington for No. 29. The Commanders have just five picks, so they could be looking to trade down.Cleveland Browns (via mock trade with WSH)Yates’ pick prediction: Shedeur Sanders, QB, ColoradoSanders — my No. 16 overall player — would reunite with Hunter. Predicting landing spots for quarterbacks beyond Ward has proved difficult this year, but if Sanders gets past Pittsburgh at No. 21, Cleveland could get good value here. He’s accurate and throws with touch, and he’d improve the Browns’ QB outlook. They currently have Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett, with Deshaun Watson out because of a torn Achilles.Prisco pick prediction:  Jahdae Barron CB, TexasThe Commanders would like to add another corner or safety and Barron can do both, according to some scouts. He has a Brian Branch feel to his game.Jeremiah pick prediction:  Jahdae Barron, CB, TexasThis is a case of a team staying put and watching a value pick fall to it. I have Barron much higher in my rankings. He and 2024 second-round pick Mike Sainristil are two guys Washington could move all over the field.30. Buffalo BillsYates’ pick prediction: Maxwell Hairston, CB, KentuckyBuffalo is searching for another cornerback opposite Christian Benford, and Hairston is sticky in coverage with 4.28 speed and good ball skills. Buffalo is a zone-heavy team, which fits Hairston’s skill set and what he saw in college.Prisco pick prediction:  Will Johnson CB, MichiganA long zone corner with great instincts is exactly what the Bills need. They don’t play a ton of man, which is why Johnson works in their defense. His 40-yard dash time is worrisome, but he plays fast enough.Jeremiah pick prediction: Trey Amos, CB, Ole MissI wouldn’t rule out a defensive tackle here, but the Bills need to add a cornerback with one of their early picks. Amos has the ability to match up with big, physical receivers.31. Kansas City ChiefsYates’ pick prediction: Kenneth Grant, DT, MichiganKansas City lost Tershawn Wharton in free agency, and Grant would beef up a thinning DT room — even though they are two very different kinds of players. Grant is disruptive against the run and could slide in next to Chris Jones. Other players who could generate interest here include Pearce and Oregon’s Derrick Harmon.Prisco pick prediction:  Josh Simmons OT, Ohio StateThey signed Jaylon Moore to be their left tackle, but he’s on a two-year deal and he’s not a slam dunk. Simmons is the best left tackle in this class, but he is coming off a torn patellar tendon. They can be patient.Jeremiah pick prediction: Josh Conerly Jr., OT, OregonIt feels like the Chiefs will be taking the best available offensive tackle, even after signing Jaylon Moore. Their tackle play has cost them in both of their Super Bowl losses during the Patrick Mahomes era. They continue to invest at the position.32. Philadelphia EaglesYates’ pick prediction: Donovan Ezeiruaku, Edge, Boston CollegeAfter 16.5 sacks in 2024, Ezeiruaku burst onto the first-round radar. He is long and instinctive, and he uses his physical tools and savviness to keep tackles on their heels. The Eagles are looking to replenish their edge depth after Josh Sweat left for Arizona in free agency.Prisco pick prediction: Josh Conerly Jr. OT, OregonWith some of the edge players off the board, they can settle in and take a tackle who can take over when Lane Johnson retires. Conerly is an athletic player with a lot of upside.Jeremiah pick prediction: Jihaad Campbell, LB, AlabamaThe rules are simple with the Eagles: They take the best Alabama or Georgia player who falls into their lap. Campbell is my No. 12 player in the draft, so he would be a tremendous value at the end of Round 1. If not for the shoulder surgery he’s recovering from, he’d be a lock to go much higher.
