AROUND THE NFL

Mike Sando of The Athletic has his favorite move for every NFL team here.  We least some of them with the appropriate team.- – -Congratulations to Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer/Cleveland.com who has had the distinction/obligation/misfortune of covering the Browns for more than 30 years.  She’s the 2025 winner of the Bill Nunn Award.  This from the Canton Repository: Mary Kay Cabot, a longtime Browns beat writer for the Cleveland Plain Dealer and Cleveland.com, will have a place in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Cabot has been named the 2025 Bill Nunn Jr. Award winner by the Professional Football Writers of America, the PFWA announced on Thursday, May 29. The award is given to a reporter who has made a long and distinguished contribution to pro football through coverage. A graduate of Lakewood High School and Kent State University, Cabot has covered the NFL since 1988. Of the 57 Bill Nunn Jr. Award winners, Cabot is just the second woman. Charean Williams (Pro Football Talk) became the first in 2018. All recipients are commemorated on a plaque inside the Hall of Fame museum. “I am truly overwhelmed and humbled to receive this prestigious award, and I can’t thank my colleagues enough for recognizing my contribution to the game over all of these years,” Cabot said in a PFWA news release. “I am especially grateful to be only the second female to win this award after the great Charean Williams, and I know there will be many more in the future. I hope I have at least in some small way helped blaze a trail for all of the fantastic women in the business today, and I am proud of all of their accomplishments. “I am also honored to join my late, dear friend Chuck Heaton (1980 Nunn honoree) as the only members of the Cleveland Plain Dealer to earn this distinction. Chuck taught me early on that everyone has a story, and to always do the job with integrity and kindness. Thanks to all who have come before me for all you’ve done for the game.” Cabot has been an at-large member of the Hall of Fame’s selection committee for the past decade. She was voted the 2015 Ohio Sportswriter of the Year by the National Sports Media Association and the Ohio Associated Press Media Editors Sportswriter of the Year in 2024. She was inducted into the Cleveland Press Club Hall of Fame in 2022. “Mary Kay Cabot is synonymous with Cleveland Browns news, and it’s because she is a relentless reporter,” Akron Beacon Journal sports columnist Nate Ulrich said in the PFWA release. “Among the countless examples of Mary Kay digging for a story is when former Browns quarterback Colt McCoy suffered a concussion in 2011. “The important insight Mary Kay gathered contributed to the NFL placing independent certified athletic trainers in press boxes and implementing a video system to monitor for potential concussions. Mary Kay is the epitome of a football writer who deserves to go from Cleveland to Canton.” Cabot will be honored by the Hall of Fame at the Gold Jacket Dinner on Aug. 1 at the Canton Memorial Civic Center. This from 2022 when she went into the Cleveland Press Club Hall of Fame: “Mary Kay was an intern at the Plain Dealer in ‘83 when I was a baseball writer,”(says longtime Cleveland PD columnist Terry Pluto)  And then in ‘84, they hired her full time out of Kent State. Grew up in Lakewood. Her father was a firefighter.” And being a sports writer wasn’t her goal. That’s just where they placed her. “She was a little like me when I came out of Cleveland State. I was just looking for a writing job. I would have preferred to do sports, but I just wanted to write. In most cases, the best writers in sports don’t necessarily love sports. They like sports, but they love to write. So, Mary Kay had that. She did the Cleveland Force soccer team for several years before the Browns. The remarkable thing I didn’t realize she’s been doing this thing for 31 years with the Browns.” Cabot started on the Browns beat in 1991. She was 29 years old and the first female major pro beat writer in the history of the Cleveland market. “She came in with Bill Belichick, who’s tough on everybody, men, women, anybody.” Belichick, the legendary coach of the New England Patriots, coached the Browns for five seasons in the early 1990s. “Back then he was even worse with the media. Bill had a favorite broadcaster named Casey Coleman, who had done the Browns radio. [Belichick] would bring Casey and Mary Kay in on Monday mornings after many games, and they’d look at film for a while.” “I think what she’s had to deal with 31 years — For winning seasons, two trips to the playoffs, one move to Baltimore, a thousand coaches hired and fired and a million quarterbacks. Mary Kay and I’ve talked a little bit about how that — neither one of us has had much to write about positive about the Browns.” And, covering the Browns that long gave her the nickname “The Queen of the Damned” in a 2016 article published in The Ringer. “That was back when the Browns were losing all those games, even more than now. And we talked about this one time to sit out there and look at those fans, because in the press box, you’re kind of right above where all the fans are, you could see them and go, I just wish we could give them better stories.” She also shared some personal and some painful parts of her personal life. “She had three miscarriages before her first son, Chris came. Now she’s had three kids and one [miscarriage] after, and she volunteered to talk about that because she said she wanted people to be aware of this, also to treasure the family you have. Now, her husband, Bill Murman, is a big part of this. She said our life is kids and Browns.” Well deserved.

NEW YORK GIANTSMike Sando of The Athletic approves of the Giants offseason approach: New York GiantsSelecting Abdul Carter with the third pick in the draft and still having their choice of available quarterbacks when the Giants selected Jaxson Dart at No. 25 showed the team read the market correctly. Whether Dart will succeed is another question entirely, and history is not on the Giants’ side (in the salary-cap era, which dates to 1993, only three of 15 quarterbacks drafted in the first round after pick No. 19 signed long-term extensions with their original teams). Even so, the process seemed sound for the Giants, a welcome change from the previous two offseasons, which featured a Daniel Jones extension (2023) and Saquon Barkley’s departure (2024).

NEW ORLEANSRyan Dunleavy of the New York Post explained QB DEREK CARR’s generosity towards the Saints when he retired a couple of weeks ago. The Saints and Derek Carr made a “trade” before he retired.  The injured Carr retired Saturday after agreeing to forfeit his $30 million fully guaranteed salary in 2025 in exchange for keeping the $10 million roster bonus he was paid in March, according to NFL Network and Pro Football Talk. The Saints also will not try to recoup any pro-rated amount of the $28.5 million signing bonus that Carr received when he inked a four-year, $150 million free-agent contract in 2023. Carr could have pocketed the $30 million if he had undergone shoulder surgery to repair a labral tear and damage to his rotator cuff. But both sides gave a little to meet in the middle on how to end a two-year union and allow the four-time Pro Bowler to retire on his terms without further hurting the Saints, who constantly live in salary-cap hell. The salary-cap relief could be used to improve the roster or at least pursue a veteran backup quarterback to add to a room that is suddenly lacking experience without Carr. The two sides restructured Carr’s contract in March to allow for a scenario where he would keep $10 million and give back $30 million. Originally injured on Dec. 8 against the Giants, Carr didn’t realize the extent of his injury until March, when he contacted the Saints medical staff and further testing was performed. Carr was the No. 16 highest-paid player in NFL history at the end of the 2024 season and his new roster bonus will push him above $200 million in earnings over an 11-year career (nine with the Raiders). But Connor Orr of Sports Illustrated is among those who think Carr, who did not have the threatened surgery, may not be done and points out the manuvering above left him a free man: 7. Derek Carr will appear in an NFL gameHave you ever tried retirement? Forced or otherwise? When you’re a high-performing individual, sitting at home is the pits. Whether it’s the Steelers needing Aaron Rodgers insurance, the Dolphins needing Tua Tagovailoa insurance or another one of Carr’s 900 former offensive coordinators dispersed around the league believing the veteran can provide an in-season spark, we have not seen the last of a quarterback who, despite all of our various narrative assignments, is only 34 years old.
TAMPA BAYMike Sando of The Athletic selects Tampa Bay’s best offseason move: Tampa Bay BuccaneersSigning Haason Reddick to a one-year, $14 million deal was a low-risk move that could give the Buccaneers high-end pass-rush production. Reddick averaged 12.5 sacks per season with three teams from 2020-23 before his holdout-shortened year with the Jets. He’ll be looking to produce Tampa Bay’s first double-digit sack season since Shaq Barrett in 2021.
NFC WEST
ARIZONAMike Sando’s favorite offseason move by the Cardinals: Arizona CardinalsAdding Josh Sweat in free agency addressed Arizona’s massive need for proven pass-rush help. Sweat’s 43 sacks for Philadelphia since 2019 dwarf the totals for any Cardinal over that span. Arizona’s most productive pass rushers since then — Chandler Jones (30.5 sacks), Dennis Gardeck (17), Markus Golden (16.5), Haason Reddick (13.5) and J.J. Watt (13.5) are long gone from the roster, save for Gardeck. Sweat carries risk with a knee that requires management, but his history with the Cardinals’ coaches assures a solid fit.
SAN FRANCISCOThe 49ers start 2025 with a completely healthy RB CHRISTIAN McCAFFREY according to Coach Kyle Shanahan.  Ian Casselberry of YahooSports.comPerhaps the best news out of San Francisco 49ers’ OTAs is head coach Kyle Shanahan saying running back Christian McCaffrey is “as healthy as can be.” McCaffrey, soon to turn 29, was limited to only four games last season due to Achilles tendinitis in both ankles and a right knee injury that prevented him from making any explosive movement or cuts. He rushed for 202 yards with no touchdowns, averaging four yards per carry. Videos from the 49ers’ workouts in Santa Clara showed McCaffrey making sharp cuts and showing burst out of them, which had everyone excited that the eight-year veteran is fully recovered and healthy going into the 2025-26 season. McCaffrey is two seasons removed from a career-high and NFL-leading 1,459 yards rushing and 14 TDs, with another 564 yards and seven scores on 67 catches. That earned him NFL Offensive Player of the Year, along with being named first-team All-Pro and his third Pro Bowl honor. He signed a two-year, $38 million extension last June, keeping him under contract through 2027.  As could be expected, the 49ers’ rushing attack was impacted significantly by McCaffrey’s absence. The team ranked 12th in the NFL last season with 2,163 yards and 17 TDs, averaging 4.7 yards per carry. Compare that to 2023, when San Francisco ranked third with 2,389 yards and 27 scores, bolstered by McCaffrey’s league-leading total. Patrick Mahomes on Travis Kelce returning to Chiefs: ‘If it’s the last ride, you would never know’Jordan Mason was the 49ers’ leading rusher last season with 789 yards and was limited by ankle and shoulder injuries. But he signed with the Minnesota Vikings in free agency. That leaves Isaac Guerendo as San Francisco’s top returning rusher with 420 yards. Yet he also struggled with knee and ankle issues. McCaffrey looking recovered and healthy should be especially encouraging for the 49ers, as the running back could miss some of training camp while on paternity leave. But that gives Guerendo, fifth-round pick Jordan James and undrafted free agent Corey Kiner opportunities to get some snaps and prepare to make contributions. And Mike Sando of The Athletic likes the return of Robert Saleh: San Francisco 49ersI liked the way San Francisco became less emotional with its contract decisions, making measured choices with veteran players. But the move to bring back Robert Saleh as defensive coordinator stands apart. Saleh gives San Francisco a true head coach of the defense after the team ran through three coordinators in three seasons on that side of the ball. The current defensive talent isn’t as good as it was when Saleh filled the role for the 49ers from 2017-20, but San Francisco couldn’t have landed a better fit.
AFC WEST
DENVERMike Sando’s favorite offseason move by the Broncos: Denver BroncosHiring Darren Rizzi as special teams coach rounds out a staff featuring Sean Payton as de facto offensive coordinator and Vance Joseph as defensive coordinator. That’s a solid triumvirate of proven coaches in three key roles. Rizzi worked under Payton in New Orleans from 2019-21 and stayed in the role through last season, so the fit should be natural. The Saints ranked 12th in special teams EPA during Rizzi’s tenure there (2019-24), including fourth on punts, punt returns, kickoffs and kickoff returns, per TruMedia.
LAS VEGASMike Sando of The Athletic on the best offseason moves by the Raiders: Las Vegas RaidersNo team upgraded at the two most important positions — head coach and quarterback — more than the Raiders this offseason. The jumps from Antonio Pierce to Pete Carroll and from Aidan O’Connell to Geno Smith could allow Las Vegas to more than double its win total following a 4-13 season.

HOUSTONMike Sando’s favorite move/moves by the Texans in the offseason: Houston TexansRemaking the receiver position by acquiring Christian Kirk and using two early picks for Jayden Higgins (second round) and Jaylin Noel (third) bought hope for the Texans after they subtracted Stefon Diggs and lost Tank Dell to injury. Those new receivers aren’t going to help the pass protection, which remains a concern, but if quarterback C.J. Stroud can get the ball out of his hands quickly, Houston has some players who might catch it.
JACKSONVILLEJayna Bardahl of The Athletic on what the Jaguars are doing now and may have in store for ATH TRAVIS HUNTER: It was a busy weekend for Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter between getting married and surprising a young fan. And on Tuesday, the No. 2 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft reported back for the second week of OTAs with his new team. After being seen mostly with the Jaguars’ offense during rookie minicamp and the first few OTAs, Hunter’s two-way implementation is taking shape. Head coach Liam Coen revealed to the media that Hunter worked with the defense last Wednesday, primarily learning fundamentals. “It was good, he’s still learning,” Coen told reporters. “He’s been learning a ton defensively and offensively.” Hunter’s two-way prowess helped him earn the Heisman Trophy while he starred on offense and defense at Colorado in 2024. Since then, he has made clear his desire to continue playing both ways in the NFL. “I think he’s pretty good,” defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile said with a laugh. “Fired up to have him out there, and he did a very good job getting out there. “He’s doing extra every day, so I have a ton of respect for everything that he’s done to this point.” The Jaguars traded up to select Hunter in April’s draft, signaling their belief in him as a rare athlete — he hopes to become the NFL’s first two-way starter in six decades — but also as a person. Hunter’s energy was the first attribute quarterback Trevor Lawrence mentioned when he spoke with reporters about the rookie after the first day of OTAs last week. “Got a lot of juice. He can run all day,” Lawrence said. “He’s like a kid, he doesn’t get tired it seems like. You can’t have enough of that. “As far as talent, it speaks for itself, ball skills, run after the catch, he’s very explosive. I didn’t realize how explosive he was in and out of cuts. He’s impressive to watch. We’ve gotten to connect a couple times, it’s only going to get better and better.” Lawrence is returning after suffering a concussion and AC joint injury in his left shoulder last year, which required surgery and prematurely ended his 2024 season. As Hunter splits time between offense and defense, there’s an added layer of complexity for him and his new quarterback to connect, which Lawrence said is something they are navigating. “You work around all that, you get as many reps as you can, you talk as much as possible out here after reps, after 7-on-7, team reps,” Lawrence said. “And then in the building, in the meeting room, watching tape, installing, talking about what I’m looking for, what coaches are looking for on different concepts, just to get him up to speed because he’s learning a new system. He’s super talented, really smart, but it takes some time to learn the system, so we’re trying to just get him up to speed so he can go and play fast and free and not think about it.” Offensive coordinator Grant Udinski described the dual-threat installation as a challenge, but one he’s enjoyed working with Hunter at. “You’re definitely going for maximum efficiency,” Udinski said. “It’s a unique challenge, but it’s a fun challenge, an exciting challenge and he’s the type of guy, because of that passion and love for the game, the guy that can do it. “It’s definitely different compared to the rest of the guys and his schedule, but it’s a unique skill set, it’s a unique person and a unique player, so that’s been fun as well.” There’s still work to do, and Jaguars OTAs continue this week and next before mandatory minicamp June 10-12. But do the coordinators expect to negotiate for Hunter’s skills in game situations? “That’s up to the head guy,” Campanile said. “We have a plan for Travis, and we’re excited to put that in place. It’s been going very well to this point, so we’re excited to keep it moving through the course of the preseason and regular season.”
TENNESSEEQB WILL LEVIS with some comments.  Jack Baer of YahooSports.comWill Levis was honest about what it’s like to go from starting quarterback to likely backup while speaking with reporters on Wednesday. Levis was QB1 for the Tennessee Titans last season, his second in the NFL, but struggled enough that the Titans found themselves picking first overall in the 2025 NFL Draft. Two years after selecting Levis 33rd overall, they went for another quarterback in Miami’s Cam Ward. That leaves Ward as the quarterback of the future, and likely the present as well, while the 25-year-old Levis faces an uncertain future. Per ESPN’s Turron Davenport, he didn’t hide his disappointment with the situation: “I think anyone who’s ever been in my situation can agree that it sucks,” Levis said Wednesday. “I’m just trying to do everything I can not to let it affect me. I’m just being the same dude every day in the building and being here for the guys.” Levis and Ward are currently the younger arms in a QB room that also features veteran backups Brandon Allen and Tim Boyle. Levis reportedly admitted he expected the Titans to draft a quarterback last month and said he was hoping he could at least get a boost from playing in the same offense as last year for the first time since his two years at Penn State in 2019 and 2020. He also had plenty of praise for Ward, via ESPN: “He is a really smart kid,” Levis said. “We’ve been able to talk a lot about just the different installs that we’ve gone through and hearing his perspective, how he sees things. He’s a heck of an athlete, a heck of a quarterback, too.” Ward was similarly complimentary: “It’s been good,” Ward said. “[Levis] was one of the first ones to come up to me in the locker room. It’s exciting to work with somebody who’s played an actual NFL football game. So I’m glad to take a little advice from him.” Levis has faced struggles before, most notably the 2023 first-round slide that saw him land with the Titans in the first place. He entered the NFL with starting potential but so far hasn’t been what the Titans need to reach the playoffs for the first time since the 2021 season, but that also doesn’t mean he’s done. Geno Smith had a similar start to his career and just signed an $88.5 million extension. Titans coach Brian Callahan praised the work Levis did with personal coach Jordan Palmer over the offseason. If he keeps showing improvement on the field for the Titans, he could give them a good problem to have if both he and Ward look game-ready.

BUFFALOMike Sando’s favorite offseason move by the Bills: Buffalo BillsKeeping quarterback Josh Allen happy on an extension worth $55 million per year, well below the $60 million threshold set by Dak Prescott, affirmed that the relationship between the team and its franchise quarterback remains strong. Buffalo was under no obligation to redo a deal that had four years remaining, but in a market where keeping superstars comes with some additional challenges, the Bills’ thinking appeared proactive. Allen is everything for Buffalo.
NEW ENGLANDMike Sando on the best offseason move/moves of the Patriots: New England PatriotsHiring Mike Vrabel as head coach and Josh McDaniels as offensive coordinator was a strong 1-2 punch for New England. McDaniels could be the best coordinator in the league who isn’t likely to become a head coach elsewhere. Having those two positions secured gives the Patriots a chance to implement a coherent vision for the long term.

Washington’s merciless schedule, Miami’s hollow roster and Arizona’s trouble staying afloat in a very resurgent NFC West will contribute to what fans may consider a disappointing season on all fronts, unless of course they hedge their personal feelings with a counter wager against their teams’ success. The Dallas Cowboys (7.5), New York Jets (5.5), Seattle Seahawks (8.5) and Las Vegas Raiders (6.5) will all surpass their Vegas-projected win totals.  The Jets’ developing offensive line will help the team grind out a few victories, while Las Vegas’s competence at QB and new-look offense will help the Raiders sneak up on a few NFL big dogs. Seattle will contend for second place in the NFC West and Dallas will aggravate every Cowboys fan who did not want Brian Schottenheimer by winning enough games for Jerry Jones to self-validate.
