NEW YORK GIANTSThe MetLife Stadium turf took down another Giants skill player on Sunday. Tyler Sullivan of CBSSports.com if Nabers’ injury is as severe as it looked on the field. It also brings the playing surface of MetLife Stadium back under the microscope. In years past, the playing surface installed at the stadium had been under intense scrutiny because so many players suffered severe injury while playing on it, so much so that they installed a new turf for the 2023 season following a rash of injuries on the prior surface. The new form of FieldTurf — called FieldTurf Core system — was tested in over 200,000 cycles on the fiber wear test by Penn State’s Center for Sports Surface Research, according to the original report from ESPN. At the time, Giants owner John Mara also confirmed this surface was also installed at the team’s practice facility, but hoped to move to a grass or a hybrid surface in the future. While this surface was installed just two years ago, the stadium intends to convert to natural grass for the World Cup next year, according to CBS Sports NFL Insider Jonathan Jones. Grass has been the preferred playing surface for players, but has proved to be a point of contention for stadium operators as it is not as durable as turf and doesn’t hold up well during non-NFL events such as concerts. Under the previous turf field at MetLife Stadium, Nick Bosa, Solomon Thomas, and Kyle Fuller all suffered season-ending injuries while playing on the surface. Meanwhile, this newer surface doesn’t appear to be a strong alternative either. During the first week of it down for NFL action back in 2023, then-Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers suffered a torn Achilles, and now Nabers could prove to be the latest to suffer a severe injury, again putting this field under an unflattering spotlight. The Nabors injury and that suffered by Odell Beckham, Jr. awhile ago have some Kennedy – Lincoln similarities per ML Football: @_MLFootball·5h🚨🚨THIS IS SCARY🚨🚨 #Giants wide receivers Malik Nabers and Odell Beckham Jr. basically suffered identical injuries😳 The same college: LSU Drafted: 1st round The same team: Giants Suffered their injuries against: The #Chargers on MetLife turf Pass thrown: By Ole Miss QBs Some have pointed out the OBJ’s injury was an ankle, not a knee – but still… What to do? Jeff Kerr of CBSSports.com: Only the New York Giants can have this kind of bad luck. A day that should be remembered for rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart leading the Giants to victory in his first career start ended up becoming forgettable. Dart won his first start without his top playing wide receiver for most of the game, as Malik Nabers left with a knee injury and is expected to be out the remainder of the season with a torn ACL. This is a significant blow to the Giants offense, and Dart, who didn’t even get a full game with the team’s best offensive player. Nabers was the key piece in Dart’s development, the player that played a significant role in why head coach Brian Daboll went to Dart in Week 4 — and will stick with the first-round pick for the remainder of the season as a result. The Giants aren’t going to bench Dart because Nabers will miss the rest of his rookie season. They’ll let their rookie quarterback learn on the fly, but it won’t be easy without a No. 1 wide receiver and a poor offensive line. This is a football team that needs Nabers in order to score points, and could use a pass catcher in order to make Dart’s life just a bit easier. New York still has solid wide receivers in Darius Slayton and Wan’Dale Robinson, but can’t rely on Jalin Hyatt to fill the void (even if he was a former third-round pick). The Giants need outside up to solve this problem, even if they are 1-3 and aren’t actually contending for a playoff berth this year. The 2025 season is about Dart’s development, and he needs a competent offense in order for that to happen. These are some trade targets or signings the Ginats should look at in the days and weeks going forward, no matter if the player is on a contending team or not. Trade candidates DeAndre Hopkins (Baltimore Ravens)The Ravens appear to have their season on the brink, something not even Lamar Jackson can fix (assuming he doesn’t miss significant time with his hamstring injury). Hopkins is 33 years old and sparingly used in his offense, having just five catches for 112 yards through four games. This is an opportunity for Hopkins to not only prove he can still play, but get a high volume as a veteran target for Dart. Hopkins has been a good voice in a young locker room in the past, one the Giants could use for Dart this year. This is a move that could benefit both parties, if the Ravens look to reset in 2025. They won’t, obviously, but a few more losses could change things. Christian Kirk (Houston Texans)The Texans did get a win on Sunday, and they have a chance to three-peat as division champions because they are in the AFC South. Do they really need to have Kirk on their roster? Especially since he has just six catches for 45 yards this season. At this point, the Giants can get Kirk for pennies on the dollar. Kirk is essentially invisible in the Texans offense and he would give Dart another veteran option in the middle of the field. Even if his best days are behind him, Kirk is only 29. Jakobi Meyers (Las Vegas Raiders)Meyers is one of the underrated receivers in the NFL, an excellent route runner that would help any quarterback. He’s been good for the Raiders this season (21 catches for 258 yards) and it would take a higher price to get him, but Meyers is also in the final year of his contract with the Raiders. Las Vegas wan’t expected to compete this season, a year which the franchise looked for stability withPpete Carroll. They are getting that at the moment, even with the play of Geno Smith and the 1-3 record. Meyers, who is also 29, and boost up his free agency stock whether he’s with the Raiders or Giants. This would be a smart move for the Giants if they can give Dart a reliable route runner with Nabers out. D.J. Moore (Chicago Bears)Hard to envision the Bears getting rid of Moore, but it doesn’t hurt to call. Moore is averaging just 10.8 yards per catch this season (16 catches for 173 yards) and he’s another good route runner for an offense — especially since the Giants need a player that can make a quarterback’s life easier. The Bears would need to get a significant draft capital back for Moore, since they are 2-2 and Caleb Williams is playing well. Not to mention Chicago is a contender and has its own young quarterback in Williams. Again, doesn’t hurt for the Giants to call. Romeo Doubs (Green Bay Packers)The Packers have so many wide receivers on their roster and will get another playmaker back whenever Christian Watson returns. Matthew Golden is coming into his own and Dontayvion Wicks is a reliable target for Jordan Love. Of course, Doubs is also coming off a three-touchdown game and is averaging a career-high 13.8 yards per catch. This is the final season of Doubs’ rookie contract and the Packers can’t re-sign all their receivers. they do like Doubs, but he could have a strong future as a No. 2 wideout in New York. He would be another player to grow with Dart while getting WR1 targets. The Packers are contenders at 2-1-1, so they may not part ways with a contributor in a Super Bowl window. Signings Isaiah Hodgins (Pittsburgh Steelers)This is likely the immediate and obvious move as they can claim Hodgins right off the Steelers practice squad. Hodgins has played three seasons with the Giants and knows the offense, so he can contribute right away. Javon Baker (Philadelphia Eagles)The 2024 fourth-round pick is on the Eagles practice squad as a developmental player, but perhaps can get some targets in New York with their depleted receiver room. A player like Baker is worth taking a flyer on. Henry Ruggs didn’t make Kerr’s list, but he’s on the one compiled by the Giants according to Giants Insider Wes Steinberg: @WesSteinbergFormer #Raiders WR Henry Ruggs III is set to have a tryout with the #Giants on Wednesday. GM Joe Schoen is exploring all options after losing Malik Nabers to a torn ACL.
PHILADELPHIAIt’s early, but Frank Schwab of YahooSports.com lists all the reasons the Eagles might be inevitable in the NFC: Last season when the Philadelphia Eagles left Tampa Bay, they looked broken. In the calendar year that has passed since then, they’re 20-1. The Eagles haven’t always been great to start this season but they’ve been good enough to go 4-0. Facing a Tampa Bay Buccaneers team that was 3-0 coming in, the Eagles dominated the first half and ultimately won 31-25. Jalen Hurts started 10 of 11 for 98 passing yards as the Eagles built an 18-point lead over a team that is an overwhelming favorite to win its division. Last season the Buccaneers beat Philadelphia 33-16 and it seemed like a continuation of the previous season, when the Eagles faded hard down the stretch. Philadelphia has been the NFL’s best team since. The Eagles’ special teams, which sealed the win over the Rams last week with a blocked field goal as time expired, got the scoring going with a blocked punt that was returned for a touchdown. The Eagles decided to be more pass-heavy than normal against a top-ranked run defense anchored by Vita Vea, and Hurts threw two touchdown passes to tight end Dallas Goedert. Then in the third quarter, the Eagles faked a tush push and Saquon Barkley scored on an easy outside run. Their defense kept the Buccaneers out of the end zone in the first half as Philly built a 24-6 halftime lead. Then the Eagles let up. There were big Tampa Bay touchdown passes to Emeka Egbuka and Bucky Irving, and Philadelphia’s offense completely stalled. But when the Eagles needed one stop to win the game, they got it. A big sack of Baker Mayfield on second down practically put the Buccaneers away. The Eagles being 4-0 is scary because they’ve yet to play their best game. Their offense has been up and down, though we saw in the first half that it is capable of being very good when the passing game is clicking. The defense let the Buccaneers back in the game Sunday, and last week was pushed around in the first half by the Rams. The Eagles have rallied to do just enough to win each game, though there has also been enough issues to keep Philly sports talk radio busy. And Philadelphia should get better. The Eagles already have good wins against the Chiefs, Rams and Buccaneers, who are all considered playoff-caliber teams. They’re 4-0 despite not playing their best. And if they repeat what they did last season after visiting Tampa Bay, they’ll start to peak in the weeks ahead. That’s a scary thought for the rest of the NFL

ATLANTAFrank Schwab of YahooSports.com has QB MICHAEL PENIX, Jr. as one of his Week 4 winners: Michael Penix Jr.: Being a young quarterback in the NFL means every week is a referendum on whether you can be a franchise player. Ask Penix. Penix was a big topic this past week after the Falcons were shut out by the Panthers in Week 3. Penix looked terrible. There were questions about whether Kirk Cousins would get a shot. Those questions won’t be asked this week. Penix was very good in a 34-27 win over the Washington Commanders. He threw for 313 yards and two touchdowns as the Falcons were comfortably ahead for plenty of the game. Penix looked like a completely different player than he did last week, but he’s a bad game from the roller coaster going back down again. That’s life for a second-year quarterback.

LOS ANGELES RAMSAnother reason why QB MATTHEW STAFFORD has become a sneaky solid Hall of Fame candidate. Michael David Smith of ProFootballTalk.com: The Rams trailed 20-13 midway through the fourth quarter on Sunday, which meant Matthew Stafford had the Colts right where he wanted them. Stafford, who threw two touchdown passes in the final six minutes of the Rams’ 27-20 win, has now led 50 game-winning drives in his career, the fifth-most in NFL history. Pro Football Reference tracks every quarterback’s game-winning drives, which it defines as offensive scoring drives in the fourth quarter or overtime, putting a team ahead for the last time. Stafford now has 50 of them, 38 with the Lions and 12 with the Rams. The NFL career record is 58 game-winning drives, set by Tom Brady. He’s followed by Peyton Manning with 54, and Drew Brees and Ben Roethlisberger with 53 each. Then comes Stafford, with 50. And counting. The four guys ahead of him will all be in the Hall of Fame sooner than later. Stafford recently became the 10th QB to top 60,000 pass yards: 1 Tom Brady 89,214 2 Drew Brees 80,358 3 Peyton Manning+ 71,940 4 Brett Favre+ 71,838 5 Ben Roethlisberger 64,088 6 Aaron Rodgers 63,7387 Philip Rivers 63,440 8 Matt Ryan 62,7929 Dan Marino+ 61,36110 Matthew Stafford 60,923 In two games, he should be ahead of Marino. By season’s end he will be around Roethlisberger vying for 6th (Rodgers will move on ahead into 5th).

DENVERJeff Kerr of CBSSports.com proclaims the Broncos as the best 2-2 team: Broncos are the best 2-2 team in the NFL Overreaction or Reality: Reality Of all the 2-2 teams, the Broncos may have the strongest case as the best of the bunch. Both of their losses came on game-winning field goals as time expired, and they are the only team in the NFL that has not trailed in the fourth quarter with time on the clock this season. Another reason Denver can make that claim? The defense has allowed fewer than 160 yards in two of its first four games and currently boasts the league’s best red zone defense (25.0%). The Broncos also rank third in opponents’ completion rate at 57.5%. If the Broncos can upset the Eagles, a run could be on the horizon. After Philadelphia, Denver plays five consecutive games against teams below .500. This team is better than its record indicates. There are eight other 2-2 teams: Minnesota, Washington, Atlanta, Arizona, Chicago, Cincinnati, Kansas City, New England.

CINCINNATIBen Baby of ESPN.com on Cincinnati’s shellacking in Denver. They have another strong team from a city starting in D coming up: By winning their first two games of the season, the Bengals were off to their best start during coach Zac Taylor’s tenure. But that feels like a distant memory, even though it was just two weeks ago. Last week, Cincinnati was handed its worst loss in franchise history, a 38-point defeat on the road against the Vikings. Monday’s loss to the Broncos didn’t feature the turnovers that plagued Cincinnati a week ago, but the longer the game went on, the more it carried the same vibe. Both games had one thing in common: The offense mustered just three points through the first three quarters. But this defeat could be more concerning. This was as comprehensive a defeat as the Bengals have suffered in some time. Cincinnati’s offense never got rolling. The defense was gashed throughout the night. And the Bengals were whistled for 11 penalties for 65 yards, with several of those coming while the outcome was still in question. And it will not get any easier with games against NFC powers Detroit and Green Bay coming up next. What to make of the QB performance: Jake Browning tried to be aggressive early and push the ball downfield, but through three quarters, he didn’t have a ton of success. During that span, he was 11-of-20 passing for 106 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions. On throws of 10 or more air yards, Browning was 2-of-7 passing, according to Next Gen Stats. Other than one drive, the offense was out of sorts for a bulk of the evening. He finished 14-of-25 for 125 yards with no TDs or interceptions. Troubling trend: The Bengals have been blown out in back-to-back first halves. In the past two games against Denver and Minnesota, Cincinnati was outscored a combined 55-6 in the first half, including 21-3 on Monday. Cincinnati was outgained by 210 yards in the first half as the Bengals surrendered more than 300 yards for the second time in the past three years. Stat to know: Cincinnati’s offense was nonexistent in the middle of the game when Denver gained control. Excluding penalties, the Bengals gained 21 yards on 18 offensive plays during five full drives that spanned the first and third quarters. During Browning’s previous stint as a starting quarterback in 2023, Cincinnati’s offense was still effective. Through two games, that has not been the case. — Ben Baby Next game: vs. Detroit Lions (4:25 p.m. ET, Sunday)

HOUSTONThe name to know in Houston is RB WOODY MARKS. Rotowire.com: Coach DeMeco Ryans said Monday that he’s excited to see how much more work Marks can handle going forward following his breakout performance in the Texans’ win over the Titans on Sunday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports. After touching the ball a combined 14 times across the Texans’ first three games of the season, Marks set season-highs in offensive snap share (56 percent), touches (21) and total yards (119) against Tennessee. He also scored a pair of touchdowns in the second half to help salt the game away. Additionally, Marks held up well in pass protection. Marks is shaping up as the leader of the Houston backfield moving forward and should be a priority pickup in fantasy leagues where he’s available. Nick Chubb is averaging 4.0 yards per carry on his 47 rushing attempts this season and has done nothing to lose his job, but Marks is noticeably more explosive with the ball in his hands at this stage of his career.– – -Meanwhile, an offensive lineman that the Texans don’t want is heading to Cleveland. Zac Jackson and Dianna Russini of The Athletic: The Cleveland Browns have acquired veteran left tackle Cam Robinson in a trade with the Houston Texans for a swap of late-round picks, the team announced Monday. Robinson got $10.75 million in guaranteed money on a one-year deal he signed with the Texans in March, but he made just one start in four games. Robinson, a 2017 second-round pick, will presumably become the immediate starter at left tackle for the Browns, who have had four starting offensive line combinations in four weeks. KT Leveston became the season’s third starter at left tackle in Sunday’s loss to Detroit. Dawand Jones was replaced after two games by Cornelius Lucas, then Jones suffered a season-ending knee injury while playing right tackle in Week 3. Lucas moved back to right tackle in Week 4 at Detroit. With its lack of offensive explosion or cohesion, Cleveland is starting to feel like a hopeless team.Because the Browns didn’t draft an offensive lineman in April and their only 2024 offensive line draft pick, Zak Zinter, hasn’t played, the team has been scrambling for help for more than a month. Leveston was acquired in a trade on Aug. 27 for a 2028 seventh-round pick. Cleveland signed tackle Thayer Munford off New England’s practice squad last week when Jones was placed on injured reserve, but Munford was inactive for his first game with the Browns. Robinson, who turns 30 on Oct. 9, has started 102 career games. He spent seven full seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars before being traded to Minnesota before the deadline last year and finishing the season as the Vikings’ starting left tackle. The 1-3 Browns play the 2-2 Vikings Sunday in London. The Texans are sticking with second-round rookie Aireontae Ersery as their left tackle, so Robinson was expendable. Robinson started the season opener for Houston and played as a backup in two other games. The Browns are responsible for the remaining $2 million in base salary from the deal Robinson had with the Texans.

MIAMIWR TYREEK HILL was really into Monday’s game – until he wasn’t as he suffered a terrible knee injury. Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill dislocated his left knee during Monday night’s 27-21 win over the New York Jets and was hospitalized overnight while undergoing further testing, according to coach Mike McDaniel. Sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Tuesday morning that Hill also tore multiple ligaments in his knee, including his ACL, and will undergo surgery later in the day. Hill’s injuries are expected to be season-ending. In an interview with WSVN 7News overnight, Hill’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, said he accompanied the star receiver to the hospital, where he was undergoing an MRI and CT scan to determine the extent of the damage. “Are there any torn ligaments, is there torn cartilage, are there any broken bones, to check on the blood flow, any, God forbid, nerve damage?” Rosenhaus said. “All of this is getting checked out. “We don’t know the extent of the injury. Doctors have told me he dislocated his knee, which I think was apparent for everyone who watched the horrific play. But what that means, and the extent of the damage, and whether he’ll need surgery, to what extent, all of that we should find out within the next couple hours.” The injury happened early in the third quarter, when Hill caught a 10-yard pass from quarterback Tua Tagovailoa on third down. Hill’s left leg was twisted under him as he was tackled out of bounds. An air cast was placed on Hill’s leg. As teammates crowded around him, Hill remained upbeat, smiling and waving to the crowd as he was driven away on a cart. “He was probably in the best spirits of any player that I’ve ever seen [have] such a terrible experience,” McDaniel said. “He immediately had wide eyes and was talking, ‘I’m good, just make sure the guys get this win.’ He was focused on the team.”– – – We usually don’t like colorful teams going all black with their uniforms on occasion (the 49ers did it poorly in the DB’s opinion a few years back), but we kind of liked what the Dolphins wore Monday (which we learned are actually “pitch blue.” John Breech ofCBSSports.com: When the Miami Dolphins take the field on Monday night, the team will be wearing a new uniform it has never worn before. The uniforms were unveiled back in August as part of the NFL’s “Rivalries” program. The Dolphins were one of eight teams to get a “Rivalries” uniform for 2025, and they’ll be the second team to debut the new look. (The Cardinals showed off their new desert-themed uniforms on Thursday.) LIVE updates: Follow along with all the action as the Jets battle the Dolphins in a “Monday Night Football” doubleheader. The plan behind the “Rivalries” program was to design a uniform based on a theme that’s local to each team. With the Dolphins being located in South Florida, the team decided to create a “dark water” jersey and helmet combination. Although the uniforms appear to be black, they ARE NOT quite that dark. According to the team, the official color here is “Dark pitch blue,” so yes, that means the jersey and helmet are both a very dark shade of blue. The Dolphins are wearing the uniforms for the first time in their Monday night game against the New York Jets, which kicks off at 7:15 p.m. ET on ESPN. Even the cheerleaders got new uniforms for the game. The Dolphins teamed up with Nike to create the new uniform with a design that is “unlike any before, featuring dark aquatic tones made to represent a team who hunts in dark waters. Complete with orange accents and sleek dark blue touches throughout.” With the Monday game being played in Miami, the Dolphins will be celebrating their new uniform by giving their field a new look. The end zones will be painted dark pitch blue while the lettering in each end zone will feature aqua letters with orange accents. Are we imagining that the Dolphins actually looked more substantial than in their normal aqua duds, and seemed to play tougher. Jeff Darlington approved – @JeffDarlingtonDolphins’ “dark water” rivalries jerseys are pretty solid… first look as the team takes the field. Someone named Clay Wendler disagrees: @ClayWendlerThe Dolphins wearing black uniforms is one of the most horrendous things I’ve ever seen in the NFL. That team should be wearing aqua, orange and white and nothing else. After Miami won Monday night, Denver won wearing their own version of dark blue and orange (without the aqua). |
NEW YORK JETSCoach Aaron Glenn was not happy. Kevin Patra of NFL.com takes heart that Glenn’s mentor Dan Campbell also had a woeful start: New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn ripped into his ball-club so loudly following Monday night’s 27-20 loss in Miami that a gaggle of reporters could hear the diatribe from outside the locker room. It was a Choose Your Negative Adjective game from Gang Green: Sloppy? Ugly? Carless? Awful? Grotesque? Heinous? Repulsive? Repugnant? Grotesque? Abhorrent? Revolting? Abominable? “Very disappointing, very disappointing. There is no way you can win any game with 13 penalties and three turnovers,” Glenn said at the podium afterward, via the team’s official website. “It just can’t happen.” Glenn was justified in ripping into his players, who fumbled and bumbled their way to an 0-4 start for the first time since Adam Gase’s 2020 club. It started with a Braelon Allen fumble that muddied an excellent, grinding opening drive. It unraveled from there. The Jets lost three turnovers, giving them the worst turnover margin in the league in 2025 (-7). They were called for 13 penalties for 101 yards. The defense misses tackles, left receivers prancing free, and can’t make a game-changing play – the only team this season without a takeaway through four games. New York is the only team in the past 20 seasons to start 0-4 with zero forced turnovers. Star receiver Garrett Wilson understood Glenn voicing his frustration at the woeful, undisciplined start to the season. “It’s obvious, but it still has to be said because we’re still not doing it right,” Wilson said. “We’re talking about it, we’re talking about it and we’re talking about it. [Limiting penalties] is the first thing we talk about in the locker room, so let’s fix it next week. If we don’t fix it next week, it’s ridiculous.” For the first-year coach, who could find himself in the dubious position of being the first Jets coach to start his career 0-5 if Gang Green falls next week to Dallas, it’s back to the drawing board. “But what we have to do is get back to work. That’s the only way that we can fix them,” he said of the mistakes. “Really, take a look at these penalties and take a look at these turnovers. And we have to understand, before you can win games, you have to learn how not to lose games. And we have to do a better job in that case, and we will.” Turning around a woebegone franchise is not for the faint of heart. Glenn’s stint as a head coach is starting off similarly to Dan Campbell’s tenure in Detroit, where Glenn served as the defensive coordinator in 2021. That Lions team lost its first eight games and was 0-10-1 before finding a victory. In Detroit, Campbell was afforded time to turn things around, but things certainly got dark that first season. The scrutiny that comes with coaching in New York likely won’t offer Glenn the same cushion. “This past week was a gotta-have-it [game],” Wilson said. “The fact that we played like we just did, this becomes an absolutely gotta-have-it game [against Dallas]. We have to get it fixed. At the end of the day, what do you want your legacy to be? When I look back at my time — man, we gotta go now. We gotta have it this week.”

JAY CUTLERThis from Tennessee by way of the New York Post: Jay Cutler has begun serving a four-day jail sentence in Franklin, Tenn., after pleading guilty to one count of misdemeanor DUI. The former Broncos, Bears and Dolphins quarterback, 42, was booked into Williamson County Jail Monday morning to serve four days behind bars as part of a deal he cut with prosecutors to bring an end to his DUI case in Tennessee. In exchange for cutting a deal, Williamson County prosecutors dismissed the weapons charge the former NFL star was facing. Cutler — who was previously married to Kristin Cavallari from 2013 to 2020 — was involved in a traffic accident in October 2024, and police said he was showing signs of being intoxicated. During the incident, the former Pro Bowler had rear-ended another vehicle, with cops saying he was slurring his speech and refused to take field sobriety tests at the scene. The former athlete later had a blood sample test taken at a local hospital. Police said they found two firearms in his vehicle, one of which was loaded. In the aftermath of the incident, Cutler faced initial charges including driving under the influence, reckless driving leading to a collision, violating implied consent regulations, and unlawfully possessing a firearm while intoxicated. The 42-year-old pleaded guilty in court and was sentenced to four days behind bars.
